Trainee Residential Real Property Appraisers in Minnesota.

Just a quick heads up to Trainee appraisers in Minnesota.  If you do not have a supervisor lined up, you will want to find one as quickly as possible.  Prior to 2008, you could obtain a Trainee Residential Real Property Appraiser license without having a supervisor.  That changed in 2008 when Minnesota changed to a model similar to that used for Real Estate agents.  Trainees must register themselves with a supervisory appraiser that holds a Certified Residential or General license.  This is like real estate agents that must associate themselves with a broker in order to obtain a license.

The Trainee can have as many supervisors as they like.  However, supervisors may only have three Trainees at a time.

  3. Hi Brett,
I am interested in eventually becoming a Certified Residential Real Property Appraiser in MN. Do you have any tips for finding a Supervisory Appraiser? I'm beginning my trainee courses soon, and before I start, I want to make sure that I will be able to find an appraiser who will work with me to help me obtain my certification. Any advice you have would be greatly appreciated! You can contact me at barrx119@gmail.com.
    Thanks!

    1. Hello Amanda,

Finding a Supervisor is simply about contacting every appraiser you can and seeing if they are in need of help. Your best chances are usually through someone you know. Maybe someone from your trainee classes already has a job and could refer you to their boss. If you know any appraisers already, start with them.

Your next option is to start calling appraisers you don't know. Google, phone book, etc. You will get a lot of "not interested right now" but keep at it. They may not need help right now, but they may in the near future. Call them back once a month. Stay at the top of their mind. When they are in need, you will be the one they remember.

It's about networking. I would highly suggest becoming a member of one of the industry organizations and going to their functions. It will be a room full of networking possibilities. I'm partial to the Appraisal Institute. The Minnesota Chapter's website is www.northstarAI. Also, the American Society of Appraisers. The local chapter's website is www.twincitiesappraisers.org. There is also the National Association of Independent Fee Appraisers (though they do not have a local chapter.) The national website is www.naifa.com

Each of these sources has member info and phone numbers.

      Good Luck!

  4. This new MRT connects places such as Holland village closer to the city area. If you're able to source out these new properties, its a good idea to go down early the night before to get the units that are good. dairy farm residences
